Introduction

Vaping has become increasingly popular as an alternative to smoking. Whether you're trying to quit smoking, reduce your nicotine intake, or simply explore the world of vaping, this full beginner's guide will provide you with all the information you need to get started. In this guide, we'll cover everything from the basics of vaping, choosing the right device, understanding e-liquids, and vaping safely. Let's embark on this journey into the world of vaping together.

Understanding Vaping: What Is It?

Vaping is the act of inhaling vapour produced by an electronic device known as a vapourizer or vape. Unlike traditional smoking, which involves burning tobacco and inhaling smoke, vaping heats a liquid, often called e-liquid or vape juice, to produce VAPOUR, not smoke, that is inhaled by the user.

1.1 Vaping vs. Smoking

Vaping and smoking differ in several key ways besides the obvious differences like much better flavour and lack of smoke:

  • No Combustion: Vaping doesn't involve combustion, so there is no smoke or ash. This makes it a less harmful alternative to smoking.
  • Less Harmful Chemicals: Traditional cigarettes contain thousands of harmful chemicals, while e-liquids have 4 main ingredients: Vegetable glycerine (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), Nicotine and a flavour concentrate.
  • Odour and Residue: Vaping produces less lingering odour and residue compared to smoking. Vaping wont turn your wallpaper yellow!
  • Customization: Vaping allows for a wide range of e-liquid flavours and nicotine levels, giving users more control over their vaping experience.

1.2 Key Components of a Vape Device

To understand vaping better, let's take a closer look at what makes up a vape kit. There are a few key components to each vape kit which can be styled in a massive variety of ways but all ultimately do the same thing.

  • Battery: The power source of the device, which is rechargeable and sends power to the coils contained in your tank or pod to heat them up.
  • Tank or Atomizer: This component holds the e-liquid and contains a coil that heats up to vapourize the liquid.
  • Coil: A wire or mesh that heats up when the battery is activated, turning the e-liquid into vapour.
  • E-Liquid: The liquid that is vapourised, typically consisting of a base (PG/VG), nicotine, and flavourings.

2. Choosing the Right Vape Device

Selecting the right vape device is crucial to ensure an enjoyable and satisfying vaping experience. There are several types of vape devices to choose from, each with its unique features and benefits. For some people the best choice is the simplest, a kit that just works when you take a drag or inhale on the mouthpiece can be a life saver! For others more advanced kits with power settings, temperature control and adjustable airflow are more suitable.

2.1 Disposable E-Cigarettes

Disposable e-cigarettes are a straightforward option for beginners. They come pre-filled with e-liquid and are ready to use right out of the box. Once the e-liquid is finished, you simply dispose of the device. to use a disposable vape you just take it out the packet and inhale on the mouthpiece. It couldn't get any easier!

  • Pros: No need for refilling or recharging. Compact and convenient. Ideal for trying vaping before investing in a more advanced device.
  • Cons: Limited flavour and nicotine options. Can be more expensive in the long run compared to refillable devices. More harmful to the environment.

2.2 Vape Pens and pod vapes

Vape pens and pod vapes are a step up from disposable e-cigarettes. They are rechargeable and allow users to choose from a wider range of e-liquids as they are refillable! This allows you much greater flavour choice and even the ability to carry around pods or tanks filled with different flavours. Vape pens and pod vapes typically consist of a battery and a tank or pod.

  • Pros: Rechargeable, reducing long-term costs. Greater e-liquid selection. Simple to use and maintain. Less Waste
  • Cons: Limited customization compared to more advanced devices. Maintenance Required.

2.3 Box Mods

Box mods are for users who want a highly customizable and powerful vaping experience. They are larger and more complex than disposable e-cigarettes or vape pens. Box mods allow users to adjust wattage, temperature, and other settings for a tailored experience. In general they are powered by external batteries and require a little bit of 'setting up' before you can use them.

  • Pros: Highly customizable. Suitable for advanced users. Can accommodate various tank sizes.
  • Cons: More complex and potentially overwhelming for beginners. Larger and less portable than disposable e-cigarettes or pod vape kits. Maintenance required.

3. E-Liquids: The Heart of Vaping

E-liquids are a crucial component of the vaping experience, and understanding their composition is essential when choosing the right vape juice for your vaping style. With a wide variety of nicotine strengths from 0mg to 20mg nicotine and an endless list of flavours you really are spoilt for choice. Take a look at the points below to see if we can help narrow this down for you and get you off to a great start with your shiny new vape kit.

3.1 Nicotine Levels

E-liquids come in various nicotine levels, ranging from nicotine-free (0mg) to high nicotine concentrations (typically 10mg or 20mg for pod systems). When selecting an e-liquid, consider your nicotine tolerance and goals. Remember its much easier to start lower rather than over estimate what you need. A harsh juice that is too strong would not be enjoyable, whereas a juice that is not quite strong enough can still be vaped in a satisfying way:

  • Low Nicotine (0mg - 6mg): Suitable for those who want to enjoy the flavours without nicotine or are gradually reducing their nicotine intake.
  • Medium Nicotine (6mg - 12mg): A middle ground for moderate smokers and those looking for a balance between flavour and nicotine.
  • High Nicotine (12mg - 20mg): Designed for heavy smokers or those using pod systems for a powerful nicotine hit.

3.2 Flavours

One of the most exciting aspects of vaping is the variety of flavours available. E-liquids come in a wide range of flavours, from classic tobacco and menthol to fruity, dessert, and beverage-inspired options. Some popular e-liquid flavour categories include:

  • Fruit: Enjoy the refreshing taste of fruits like strawberry, watermelon, and mango.
  • Dessert: Satisfy your sweet tooth with flavours like vanilla custard, caramel, or chocolate.
  • Menthol: Experience a cool and minty sensation.
  • Tobacco: For those who want a familiar taste reminiscent of traditional cigarettes.
  • Beverage: Vape your favourite drinks, such as coffee, cola, or tea.
  • Candy: Discover e-liquids that mimic the taste of your favourite candies and treats.

When choosing e-liquid flavours, consider your personal preferences and try different options to find the ones you enjoy the most. You may be shocked to find that a flavour you would never usually consider could potentially become a firm favourite in your new pod kit or sub tank.

3.3 PG/VG Ratios

E-liquids typically consist of a base that includes propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG). These two components influence the flavour, throat hit, and vapour production of the e-liquid. Understanding the PG/VG ratio is important when selecting an e-liquid. A higher PG liquid will be thinner than a higher VG liquid.

  • Propylene Glycol (PG): A higher PG content results in a stronger throat hit and more intense flavour. E-liquids with higher PG are typically thinner and work well with smaller, mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices.
  • Vegetable Glycerin (VG): A higher VG content produces thicker vapour clouds and a smoother throat hit. E-liquids with higher VG are often used in sub-ohm and direct-to-lung (DTL) devices.

Common PG/VG ratios include 50/50, 70/30, and 80/20, but there are various ratios available to suit different vaping styles and preferences.

4. Getting Started with Vaping

Once you've chosen your vape device and e-liquid, it's time to start vaping. Remember to keep hold of the box with the serial number in the event of a faulty kit and make sure you check out the user manual for information on any settings or features that may come in handy!  Here are the essential steps to get started:

4.1 Assembling Your Device

If you have a vape pen or box mod, you'll need to assemble your device by connecting the tank or atomizer to the battery. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific device. In general these types of vape kit use a 510 screw in connection, just make sure it screws together smoothly and without resistance as cross threading is not usually covered under your warranty and will render the kit basically useless!

4.2 Priming the Coil

Before using a new coil, it's important to prime it to prevent dry hits and extend the coil's lifespan. Priming the coil for at least 3-5 minutes can really extend the lifespan of your coils and prevent any horrible dry or burnt tastes.

  • To prime a coil: Drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton of the coil. Assemble the tank and fill it with e-liquid. Let the tank sit for a few minutes to ensure the coil is fully saturated.

4.3 Inhaling Techniques

Vaping involves inhaling the vapour produced by your vape kit. Depending on the type of kit you have chosen there are 2 ways to inhale vapour and get started.

  • Mouth-to-Lung (MTL): Inhale the vapour into your mouth first and then into your lungs, similar to how you would smoke a traditional cigarette. MTL is common with vape pens and pod systems.
  • Direct-to-Lung (DTL): Inhale the vapour directly into your lungs, bypassing the mouth. This technique is often used with sub-ohm devices and box mods. Experiment with both techniques to find the one that suits your preferences.

5. Vaping Safely

Vaping can be a safe alternative to smoking when used responsibly. However, it's essential to be aware of potential safety concerns and take precautions. From looking after your batteries, cleaning connections and making sure to charge your kit properly, a few simple steps can help you maintain an enjoyable and safe vape.

5.1 Battery Safety

Batteries are a critical component of vape devices, and mishandling them can be dangerous. Looking after external batteries and even internal ones is crucial for longevity and preventing any mishaps.

  • To ensure battery safety: Use the charger provided with your device, or a reputable one designed for your battery type. Don't leave your device charging unattended. Avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures. Inspect your batteries for damage and replace them if necessary.
  • Never use damaged batteries: If your battery has any swelling, scratches, damage to the battery wrap or dents then replace it. You can replace battery wraps yourself if that is the only thing damaged.

5.2 E-Liquid Safety

E-liquids can be harmful if ingested or mishandled especially by children.  Keep e-liquids out of reach of children and pets. Store e-liquids in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and wash thoroughly if exposed.

5.3 Health Considerations

While vaping is considered less harmful than smoking, it is not risk-free. Some potential health considerations include:

  • Nicotine Addiction: Vaping with nicotine can lead to addiction, so it's important to monitor your nicotine intake and use the lowest level that satisfies your cravings.
  • Respiratory Health: Long-term effects of vaping on lung health are still being studied. If you have respiratory issues, consult a healthcare professional before vaping.
  • Youth and Non-Smokers: Vaping is not recommended for non-smokers, especially youth, as it can lead to nicotine addiction.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant individuals should avoid vaping due to potential risks to foetal development.

Please always consult a doctor for any health related issues with regards to vaping. We are not medical professionals.

Our very own UK government concluded, with the help of the NHS, that vaping is up to 95% less harmful than smoking. In a 2015 press release.

6. Maintaining Your Vape Device

Proper maintenance of your vape device is essential to ensure it continues to function effectively and safely. It might not be the most fun you will ever have however it will make vaping itself more enjoyable. Here are some key maintenance tasks:

6.1 Cleaning Your Device

Regularly clean your vape device to prevent e-liquid build-up and maintain performance. To clean your device, first remove the tank from the mod, give the 510 threading on the device a clean with some dry tissue, disassemble the tank and remove the coil, rinse the tank under warm water, Allow the components to dry thoroughly before reassembling and installing a new coil.

6.2 Replacing Coils

Coils have a limited lifespan and will eventually need replacement. Signs that it's time to replace a coil include a burnt taste or decreased vapour production. Refer to your device's manual for instructions on how to replace coils.

6.3 Refilling E-Liquid

Keep your tank or atomizer adequately filled with e-liquid to prevent dry hits. Always refill your tank before it's completely empty to avoid burning the coil. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for refilling and use.

7. Common Vaping Terminology

As you explore the world of vaping, you'll encounter various terms and phrases. Here are some common vaping terminology you should be familiar with:
